The vast range and diverse nature of activism in Sheffield makes it very difficult to incorporate everyone in one go. To do so would risk excluding groups or individuals, and specific periods. It would also be an unmanageable endeavour. We aim, therefore, to run the project in several phases, over the course of a few years. Activist and academics will work together to shape the themes and areas of focus for each phase throughout the lifetime of the project.
In the first few years of the project, we have collected archival material from Hunters Bar Against Poll Tax and the Wildcat Art Collective; we have worked with the WEA to train people in oral history techniques and collected over 20 interviews; we have held workshops with Ignite Imaginations; and we are running a project with members of Women Against Pit Closures.
